What to ask before you buy a WMS

What to ask before you buy a WMS

Most WMS demos show you the happy path. Here is what to ask about exceptions, integrations and who owns the roadmap.

Every warehouse management system looks the same in a sales demo: a clean dashboard, a smooth pick path, stock counts that update instantly. The questions that matter are about what happens when that path breaks.

Ask to see a short-pick handled live, not described. Ask how a damaged pallet gets quarantined without freezing the rest of the location. Ask what happens to your data if you switch providers in three years — is it yours, in an open format, or locked in theirs?

A WMS is infrastructure. You are not buying a screen, you are buying who answers the phone when it breaks at 11pm.

Integration is the second place vendors gloss over. A WMS that cannot talk to your ERP without a consultant and six months is not integrated, it is adjacent. Ask for a reference client on the same ERP version you run, not a slide claiming compatibility.

We built Qgenx Stockify in-house for exactly this reason — when a client needs a new report or an unusual SKU rule, the same team that built the system ships the change, not a ticket queue three time zones away.
